BFC Volunteers Make It Happen
For those that don’t already know, the vast majority of the people that make the Black Fly Challenge happen, including the organizers, are volunteers from Indian Lake, Inlet and beyond.
The organization necessary to produce the BFC is an on-going process that never really stops. The BFC Race Committee does the planning but the race-week volunteers are the ones the execute plan.
BFC volunteers give their time every year to perform the countless duties necessary to create a successful event, including: [Read more…]

Hammer Post-Race Tips
Reflecting Back, Looking Forward…
Whether your recent BFC was a personal best, a DNF, or somewhere in between, now is the time to reflect—making written notes even—on how things went and why.
Start with reviewing what went well so that you can be sure to incorporate it into your next race. This includes factors like physical performance (such as pacing) and your gear and fueling choices.
Next, take note of areas of opportunity, such as consuming too many or insufficient calories or fluids, timing them wrong, going out too fast, or choosing the wrong gear. These extremely helpful “lessons learned” can lead to improvement next time.
Instead of allowing these setbacks (and don’t worry, we all have them!) to be “stumbling blocks,” turn them into “stepping stones” so that you can achieve greater success in your future races.

Tire Size Matters – For Prizes
In the interest of fair competition BFC has and will continue to use the widely accepted guidelines for tire size: To be eligible for prizes CX tire width must not exceed 40mm and MTB tire width must be at least 1.95″.
The BFC Competition Director felt it necessary to reiterate this policy due to the proliferation of different bike styles and tire sizes that have come to the race in recent years.
As always, we will not be checking tires sizes. Competitive racers must self-police this standard. If there is a protest, take it to the scorers table and if necessary bikes and/or tires may be inspected for compliance.
MTB is essentially BFC’s ‘open’ category with a variety of bikes and tires. However, if you want to be eligible for prizes your bike and tires should comply with generally accepted standards.
Race Course Report
The Limekiln-Cedar River Road through the Moose River Plains is in generally good condition, especially considering the amount of rain recently. The section that was closed, from West of Silver Run to just East of Lost Ponds, was reopened Wednesday and is surprisingly solid but will require racers utmost attention on the downhills.
From Byron Park, the old Wakely Golf Course water station at mile 5 has been eliminated (when the race starts in Indian Lake) for safety reasons so the first water station will be at about 9.5 miles.
From mile 22 to mile 25 racers will need to be extra cautious on the downhills. This part of the recently reopened section had to be raked and there are marbles everywhere. Vehicle traffic is creating smooth grooves and hopefully will make the road even better by Saturday.
After mile 25 the road smooths out (except for a sand pit at mile 26.5) and is in good condition all the way to Inlet. Between Red River (the last water station) and the Limekiln gate there is a single down arrow warning racers to use caution for a very sharp s-curve at the bottom of a downhill.
This is followed a few miles later by a 2-down arrow near the top of the last downhill before the gate. This hill is steep and fast. A 3-down arrow was posted to warn racers about the upcoming curves which could be dangerous at a high rate of speed.
The Fern Mountain trails will have the usual combination of roots & rocks, hard & fast sections, wet but solid sections and a couple mud holes, which we spent several hours today trying to drain. The forecast now through race day is sunny and breezy, which should stiffen things up a bit.

Hammer Nutrition Tips
AVOID BONKING DURING THE BLACK FLY BY FOLLOWING THESE 5 TIPS.
Tip #1 Hydration: Replenish, don’t replace! Keep fluid intake below 25 oz./hr during exercise. Find out how much.
Tip #2 Caloric Intake: Stay fueled, but not overwhelmed, by consuming 120-180 calories/hr. Are carbs best?
Tip #3 Electrolytes: You need an array of vitamins and minerals, not just salt, to finish strong. What do you need?
Tip #4 Pre-Event Fueling: Don’t tax your system with a meal within 3 hours of start time. But what if you’re hungry?
Tip #5 Recovery: Refuel your tank with 60 minutes of finishing a workout. Are carbs or protein better?
