Race Course Report
The condition of the Moose River Recreation Area (MRRA) section, as of today, is…
From the Limekiln Lake gate to the Otter Brook Road intersection the race course is fast and relatively smooth. In fact, it’s fast enough that racers better not forget how sharp and steep some of the turns are between Red River and Otter Brook.
Turing left onto Moose River Road the course is still fast, if uneventful, until MRRA mile marker 19. At that point the right shoulder goes soft and from there it gets really exciting with some long down-hills to the Cedar River gate that are filled with marbles, boulders and other hazards.

YellowJacket Racing to Produce Black Fly Results
The BFC race committee is pleased to announce that YellowJacket Racing will provide electronic timing and scoring for this year’s race. Rochester’s premier event management company, YellowJacket uses an AMB Chip Timing Technology system that produces accurate results in a timely fashion – faster than previous Black Fly races – which is great news for competitors.
Black Fly Permit Approved by DEC
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation approved the TRP (permit) for the Black Fly Challenge on April 20, prior to the current budget issues. DEC has further stated that the race will be allowed to go through the Moose River Recreation Area, as usual.

Black Fly 2010 Race Categories
Category & Class changes for 2010 are as follows:
> Junior and Junior X categories have been consolidated into one category.
> The Mens Cyclocross category has been expanded from one to three age classes.

Also, remember that the Cyclocross category includes only cyclocross bikes.
….Hybrids and 29ers are still in the mtb category.

Black Fly 2009 Race Notes
The 14th running of the Black Fly Challenge saw a record 300 entries, a rise in the number of female competitors and continued growth in cyclocross competition.
The Sport and Beginner mtb categories remain strong but some competitors moved from the Expert mtb category to the new Cyclocross category, thus lowering the level of competition in Expert. It has become apparent that the BFC may need to add a Cyclocross age class and combine Expert age classes.
While the BFC is no longer affiliated with NORBA, the old NORBA guidelines still make sense: Any age class with less than 5 competitors should be combined with another such age class.
Possible Expert & Cyclocross classes for the 2010 BFC may be as follows:
Mens Expert mtb: 19-39 and 40-99
Womens Expert mtb: 19-99
Mens Cyclocross: 19-39 and 40-99
Womens Cyclocross: 1-99
Note to competitors: The BFC race committee is exploring electronic timing and scoring systems to produce results faster and hopes to have something new in place for the 2010 BFC.
