Due to the fact that we have received more “what category does my bike fit in?” questions this year than ever before we recently posted the UCI spec for cyclocross bikes, including the max tire width of 33mm.
Some racers responded that they prefer fatter tires and after some research we have found that a considerable number of BFC CX competitors race on tires wider than 33mm.
Some new cyclocross, gravel and adventure models will even fit tires up to 45mm.
As always, our aim is to keep the BFC safe, fair and fun – and if it’s not fair it’s not fun. So, as far as Cat1 competition goes (CX or MTB) here’s where we stand:
- As always, all categories and classes are expected to be self-policing.
- We have never measured tires and don’t intend to start, however…
- If someone protest your bike it will be inspected at the scoring table.
- So if you’re a Cat1 racer and in the money your bike should fit your category.
Given the nature of the course we understand the desire for fatter tires. As a guideline CX bike tires should not exceed 45mm. Anything fatter is an MTB tire.
